Two great nights full of talent, dedication and commitment was on display at both the Wyre and Fylde Council Sports Awards this year. The YMCA were privileged to win two awards for Services to Underrepresented Groups at the Fylde Sports Awards in November and Community Project of the Year at the Wyre Sports Awards in October. Both winners will go on to represent Fylde and Wyre at the county Active Lancashire Sports Awards on November 22nd at the Dukenhalgh Hotel in Clayton le Moors.

Our fully deserved winners were followed by a highly commended award for the YMCA in the Active Workplace category.

Michael Harrison, Senior Marketing Manager said, “We are truly thankful to Fylde and Wyre Council for recognising our work and to all the staff, volunteers, partners, businesses and members of our local communities who made this possible. We couldn’t have done it without you. Your hard work and dedication is greatly appreciated. It was wonderful to see a huge array of local sporting achievements and deserved winners on the night, plus amazing examples of dedication to the cause. Together, we are making our communities active through sport”

YMCA Fylde Sharks children’s disability swimming club uniquely offers one to one swimming lessons to disabled children and young people up to 18 years old in the Fylde area with varying degrees of disability. Children with complex physical disabilities to those with social, cognitive and behavioural needs can enjoy swimming lessons with a qualified swimming teacher which provides mental stimulation and improved physical mobility.

While the physical and emotional benefits of exercise are well known, did you know that only 40 percent of older adults are engaged in regular physical activity. Working with our partners, friends and volunteers from across Wyre, we have developed a number of Community Sports Sessions which are open to all members of the community and have been designed for all abilities. The Your Move & CSI (Challenge through Sport Initiative) Boxercise session at YMCA Lofthouse building in Fleetwood is one such example of our community sessions. The project aims to positively impact on the lives of hundreds of people living locally. The session regularly hosts 20 people from Fleetwood who have been referred from agencies including Regenda Housing, Healthier Fleetwood and local community groups.
